Forgotten Realms designer can't get over the fact that someone out there has a PhD in the D&D setting he created: "You do know I make this all up, you know?"

Ed Greenwood Amazed by PhD in Forgotten Realms Lore

Ed Greenwood, creator of the iconic Forgotten Realms setting in Dungeons & Dragons, recently shared his astonishment upon learning that someone had earned a PhD dedicated to the lore of his fantasy world—a setting that has shaped both tabletop and video game narratives for decades.

Speaking on the Slandered Gaming podcast, Greenwood remarked:
"I was told that somebody had a doctorate in Realms lore obtained from an official university. And I said, 'Really? And when you impaneled the experts for defending the doctorate, why didn't you phone me?'"

During a 25th-anniversary show themed around Baldur’s Gate 2, Greenwood reunited with David Gaider (of Dragon Age fame) and Trent Oster, recounting the story. He explained that the university did contact D&D publishers to verify his status, only to be informed, incorrectly, that Greenwood had passed away—a shock to all parties. Greenwood joked about the situation:
"Apparently, they repeated when it was time for the D&D movie guys. That was a very good way of grieving the brush off."

Despite the humorous anecdote, Greenwood expressed genuine amazement that anyone would study the Forgotten Realms so deeply and that an accredited institution would recognize that scholarship with a doctorate.

Created in the 1960s as a setting for Greenwood’s childhood stories, the Forgotten Realms has grown into one of D&D’s most celebrated worlds. It remains central to the tabletop game and has been featured prominently in numerous video games, including the Neverwinter Nights series and the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3.
