Fallout 3 remaster reportedly in production as Bethesda boss Todd Howard confirms the developer is working on Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 76, "and some other things"

Rumors of Fallout 3 Remaster Gain Steam Amid Bethesda Hints

A Fallout 3 remaster may be on the horizon, with reports suggesting the iconic 2008 RPG is receiving the same glossy treatment as The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered.

Bethesda has remained deliberately vague about its projects. In a recent interview with GQ, director Todd Howard stated:

"We have hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we're doing."

While Howard didn’t confirm specifics, Video Games Chronicle reports that one of the “other things” may indeed be a remaster of Fallout 3, following the model used for Oblivion earlier this year (VGC, 2025).

When discussing the 2008 RPG directly, Howard praised its opening sequence and tone:

"Fallout 3 has the best opening of any game I’ve ever worked on. It has a very harsh tone."

Legal documents from 2023 also hint at earlier plans to bring Fallout 3 back to modern platforms. Leaked Xbox scheduling indicated an ambitious release plan for both The Elder Scrolls 6 and a Fallout 3 remaster, although that timeline ultimately fell through. Nevertheless, the leak underscores ongoing interest in revisiting Bethesda classics.

Howard emphasized what makes Fallout enduring:

"Fallout is great because it can be a gonzo B-movie one moment and then it can be life-or-death trauma. It’s what we spent a lot of time getting right on the TV show. I think the best quest is one with the characters you meet: what have they done to survive and why? How do you feel about that?"

Fans of the series may have to wait for official word, but with Bethesda already engaged in multiple Fallout projects, the remaster of Fallout 3 seems more plausible than ever.
