Battlefield 6 Devs Reveal “Big Red Button” for Total Map Destruction
The Battlefield series has long been celebrated for its over-the-top destruction, from crumbling walls to collapsing ceilings and tank-destroyed buildings. In Battlefield 6, developers at DICE Studios have taken things a step further: they have a “big red button” that can obliterate everything on any map in a single tap.
In an interview with Kotaku, Battlefield 6 producer Jeremy Chubb and design director Shashank Uchil confirmed the existence of the feature and shared how it’s used. Chubb explained, “It usually causes some big meltdowns in teams working on performance because we designed the maps not to be instantly triggered, like every instance of destruction,” which reportedly raised some eyebrows internally.
The button isn’t just for fun. The developers use it to test map functionality under extreme destruction, ensuring gameplay remains enjoyable whether a map is pristine or completely demolished. Uchil elaborated: “Think of the map as having three different states, right. The map starts out in a pristine state… then, as the map progresses, it gets more and more destroyed. And towards the end, if everybody's using a rocket launcher or C4, you hit peak destruction. And the game has to be good in all three phases, the pristine phase, the in-between phase, and the final phase.”
By destroying everything at once, DICE can evaluate critical gameplay elements, such as whether enough cover remains for players and if the map is still fun after total destruction. While the feature sounds thrilling, fans are eagerly awaiting footage of the maps being obliterated, though modders may well achieve similar spectacles on their own.
Battlefield 6 continues to push the boundaries of destructible environments, blending practical testing with player spectacle to deliver chaotic, ever-evolving battlefields.
